The Thundering Herd

Sean and I just got back from a weekend trip yesterday.  Where we went was quiet and peaceful--about as low-stress as one could possibly hope for.

We got back home, and within a few hours we already had a freight train tearing through the house.  The "freight train" is actually Elroy and Reggie, chasing one another through the house in their particular version of tag, but it really does sound like a freight train when they do it.  Or a thundering herd.  (I realize I've stolen that name from some college sports team, but it's super-appropriate in this case).  We had our first day in months where it got up into the 60s, so we had the back porch door open and the kitties just kept tearing around and around the house, stopping only occasionally to wrestle.  Even Mister (the old man of the group) got into the act, playing tag briefly with Reggie when Elroy ducked out of the game for a minute.

I will tell you that, as peaceful and quiet as our weekend was, hearing that thundering herd go roaring by is much preferable to me.  I will happily give up a little peace and quiet if it means our buddies are healthy and having fun.

  1. Shame on you for not knowing that "The Thundering Herd" was the name of Woody Herman's band. Tsk tsk

In recent years, it's also been the nickname of Marshal University's athletic teams officially since since 1965 but sporadically before that (other nicknames include 'Big Green' and 'Green Gobblers' (who thought up that one ??)

The freight train effect has revisited our house - it's been gone for at least six years, but Lwaxana as reintroduced us to the effect as she and various older cats chase each other around the house

  3. I was thinking it was Marshall (I even saw the movie), but was too lazy to look it up.

I miss Lwaxana!!! I'm glad she finally told you her name. Which of the cats there does she seem to be bonding with the most?

  4. Lwaxana has bonded most with Mouse and Ducat, although she plays frequently with Seven and Sophie (particularly when she's worn out Mosuee & Ducat). I'd say that Mouse is her best buddy since they usually nap together during the afternoon
