Late last night I was sitting on the porch, enjoying the cool transition to Fall, listening to the last bugs and frogs, and reading a fantastic book when I happened to look up. I'm not sure what prompted the interruption--I didn't really notice a sound, and I don't think I sensed movement. Elroy had been sitting on the porch with me, in his nightly sentry position on the railing of the porch, but this time, he wasn't sitting on the railing anymore. Behind the big palm tree, I saw Elroy's head...ABOVE the tree. I don't know if Elroy was just having himself a little superhero moment or what, but Elroy had effectively turned into Spiderman (or, I guess, Spidercat). He had all of his claws splayed out on our screen and his back legs had made it about a foot and a half up the screen, putting his head at just over the top of the palm fronds.
I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but Elroy is not...svelte. Which we're kind of happy about, because as an FIV-positive kitty, we're actually glad he has some meat on his bones. Suffice it to say that it took some kind of strength to pull his not-tiny body up using only his claws and his leg muscles. Right after I got over being impressed, I was mortified. "Elroy, get OFF the screen" I started to yell, but I barely got the sentence out before he was already heading for the ground.
One thing about cats...it doesn't seem to matter how long you live with them, they're always full of surprises.
