Mister has been very cuddly lately. And by that, I don't mean he's been snuggling up to us. Mister, in spite of the fact that he always wants to be near us, never seems to want to be right up on us. He'll sleep on the pillow by your head, for example. Or sit with me while I'm getting ready in the morning. Or follow me from room to room. But cuddling? Not really his style.
So I've been surprised a few nights now when I've woken up to find him touching me. Last night, he had draped his arm over my arm, and seemed to be holding it. One night, I woke up and he was sleeping on the pillow by my head, and our noses were just touching. It was the sweetest thing ever. I just laid there, smiling and breathing in Mister's breath while he napped happily.
These are the moments that really matter.
It's been surprising, because the presence of Little Bitty Buddy Girl (aka Zelda) has proven to be much less stressful on our 17-year-old than we thought it would be. He actually plays with her sometimes. It's weird, and it's not really what you expect to see when you see cats playing, but he lets her chase him, then he turns around and chases her right back. It's not a mean or aggressive chase, either. It's the indulgent chase of an elder figure who realizes she means no harm and is just being youthful and exuberant.
If I didn't know better, I would wonder if having Zelda in the house has given Mister a new lease on life. He eats better, and seems to be putting on weight. A month or so ago, we got him shaved for the first time. (We finally broke down and did it.) He seemed pretty happy about that, too. It's weird to see his tiny frame, since it's been camouflaged for so long under all that medium-length hair, but there you have it:
Mister showed us last year when he took immediately to walking on a harness that he could learn new "tricks." I guess he's also shown us he has a few other "tricks" up his sleeve, like being cuddly in his old age and getting along with new little buddies.
